Five Things Going On At The Same Time

January 13th, 2004

Rands: “Folks, this isn't multi-tasking. This is advanced case of Nerd Attention Deficiency Disorder. I am unable to function at my desktop unless I've got, at least, five things going on at the same time. If your count came close, you're probably afflicted, as well.”

I definitely "suffer" from NADD—on my desktop currently are a browser (unsually only two tabs are open in one window: more often than not it's 2-3 windows with 4-5 tabs in each); a bookmarks window; my email program; a notepad for copying & pasting random text; my aggregator; and ICQ (which I only ever use late at night, since that's the only time that the guy I talk to on it is online)—but not as bad as the author has it. I know people who can't work and have IM, who knew that the time lost to switching tasks was not worth multi-tasking long before studies were done on it. But I grew up with "multi-tasking", so I'll probably always have this cursed affliction.
