Bjørn Lomborg

This Charlatan's Nonsense

January 19, 2005

Dave Pollard in a footnote: “One reader has taken me to task for ridiculing Bjorn Lomborg without addressing his arguments. Those who think this charlatan's nonsense needs to be refuted should read this, this, or this. There's about 300 pages of detailed refutations by dozens of qualified, award-winning scientists (neither of which Lomborg is). I consider Lomborg's arguments to be in the same class as Zundel's.”

I assume he's referring to me, as I've recently criticized Dave for his comments about Björn Lomborg. I stand by the criticism, but I acknowledge (or even better, celebrate!) the links Dave has provided, and link to them myself, though I don't necessarily endorse them (not having actually read them yet). In another footnote, he also defends his spelling of "denyer". I assure my readers I felt like a jerk by putting the sic mark in my quotes, because really, nobody likes having their spelling mistakes pointed out. (When I make a spelling or grammatical mistake, I always appreciate a private heads up and make a discreet change.) He argues compellingly for the spelling, so much so that I'm considering removing the sic mark I placed next to them in my entry.

The Folly of Lomborgian Eco-Holocaust Denial

January 14, 2005

Dave Pollard recently reviewed Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed by Jared Diamond, and links to several reviews and interviews. I have criticized Dave recently about his lack of external links, so I am compelled to give him credit for the extensive linking in his review. He does an excellent job of reviewing the book and has convinced me to put the book on my already-too-long reading list.

Dave calls Lomborg “the wacko discredited eco-holocaust-denyer [sic]”, “the discredited and unqualified Davos poster-child” and refers to supporters of Lomborg—a group I am not a member of—as “Clowns like environmental holocaust-denyer [sic] Lomborg” and his ideas as “the folly of Lomborgian eco-holocaust denial”. There are no links either to Lomborg's work in any of Dave's references to him, nor are there any links to articles discrediting him. Until he does either, or both, I cannot take his criticisms of Lomborg seriously.

Lomborg Dishonest?

January 9, 2003

Anti-green author dishonest, says scientific panel

The committee sums up the complaints: "Lomborg is accused of fabricating data, selectively and surreptitiously discarding unwanted results, of the deliberately misleading use of statistical methods, consciously distorted interpretation of the conclusions, plagiarisation of others' results or publications, and deliberate misrepresentation of others' results."

It is not quite so harsh in its own conclusions, accusing Prof Lomborg of not comprehending the science rather than deliberately intending to mislead or being grossly negligent. Nevertheless, it found, he was guilty of scientific dishonesty.

I find the about page of the Danish Committees on Scientific Dishonesty to be...somewhat unsatisfying (you'll see why).

But nevermind that. I've actually read The Skeptical Environmentalist, and it comes across as at least a valid attempt at non-partisan debunking of 'environmentalism', in that he doesn't come across as the right-wing zealots who ridicule environmentalists without really attacking the substance. That said, I think he failed. He comes across as a used-car salesman: he over-sells what is really something that can be defended in more moderate terms. But Lomborg's book is not entirely useless: he is a statistics professor, and is not interested in appeals to emotion using over-inflated rhetoric, and seems able to spot statistics that either come out of thin air or are inflated from reputable sources (both types of statistic, naturally, he rejects). The book is disappointing because Lomborg does not have specialized training in the biological or chemical sciences, and although he does seem to have a grasp in his area of expertise, it's, well, not enough.

If there's any contribution that the book makes, it's that environmental doomsayers (and doomsayers in general) often have a very poor grasp of actual statistics to back up their claims, and makes the useful assumption that long-term trends are preferred over picking two points on the graph.

Link via Tina. It's probably about time I steal my links from someone else find my own damn links.
