Communicate to Your Listeners as You Would in Daily Life

Lisa Wood, a KEXP DJ, wants radio DJs to stop yelling: “all the "newbies" in radio are taught is to pretend you're talking to one person. Be it a friend, your boyfriend/girlfriend, etc., communicate to your listeners as you would in daily life. I've even seen people put a picture of someone on the control board to try and help them get to that natural, conversational place. Whatever works for each individual, at least try it!”

I only listen to it at night these days, so I don't have the daytime to compare it too, but the DJs on KEXP often speak in hushed tones, as if they know people are in an apartment complex and don't always listen to audio in their headphones. Also, the brief promos in between songs (of the station, not of something anciliary to it) are often a young woman whispering "KEXP Seattle". Whispering, as Dave Pollard suggests, signals a certain level of intimacy between speaker and listener, as if what's being communicated is a secret.

KEXP is quite simply the best radio station ever. I like when they have little kids saying "K-E-X-P". John in the morning is a good way to start your day Richard.
