Unfinished Thoughts: Murs

February 16th, 2005

Pinder turned me on to Murs, and after listening to some of his songs, wrote the following. I don't usually quote lyrics because I usually don't pay attention to them, though less so for rap. The following is an exception to quoting even rap lyrics. (I trail off at the end because I ran out of things to say.)

One of the more remarkable rap songs I've heard in terms of lyrics is Murs' "The Pain". Where the vast majority of rap songs discussing how well the emcee relates to the opposite sex talks about their prominence in almost every area, Murs chooses to highlight his weaknesses:

So if you're still interested you should come get at me
Cause I'm tired of getting shot down, put down and dissed
I wanna be picked up, held tight and kissed
But things like these don't happen to dudes like me
Because I'm more Coldplay than I am Ice-T
They say that good girls love bad guys and that might be
But a bad girl with a good guy, that's unlikely
So what's a man to do to get to hold hands with you?
Do I talk shit and stand and look hard with my crew?

Three years ago, on the personal section of my weblog, I wrote something to the effect that I was tired of chasing girls, inviting them to dinner or basketball games or whatever and either being told they were "busy" (the truth hurts, but not as much as your lies) or unable to make a move during said events.

I try to be settle, but even flirting got me shooked
I would never get a smile, all I got was dirty looks
And my self-esteem is low enough, I got teased growing up
And what I do, I beat 'em up, but that only made me tough
It didn't get me girls, or notes in class
Same girls who used to tell, when I would pinch their ass
But if another boy did it, then they would get gritty
So I pretended the handball was their face when I hit it
And I admit it's part the reason why I'm do em like I do
And women in my life, there has only been two
My mother being one, and the other one is done
So my philosophy on dating is; ain't no fun

On "Freak These Tales" Murs raps about, after being denied by the girls he was chasing, he got his first taste of sex, taking advantage of "chicks on E, that you meet out at these raves, that use it as an excuse / for them to misbehave", so the album is contradictory not in the usual sense that rap albums are contradictory: instead of glorifying the violent lifestyle then rapping about how it's only blacks killing blacks, Murs [me trailing off mumbling]
