Unbiased Weather

December 3, 2003

Steve Gigl: “they're used to getting unbiased weather where they live, while the Cities stations believe that to get viewers for their news they need to scare the hell out of them. So we get "snowstorm" stories where once we would only get "snowfall" stories. [...] It's gotten to the point that the weather forecasts should have the label "For Entertainment Purposes Only," because planning anything based on their predictions for the first snowfall/big thunderstorm/whatever has been so universally overblown.”

I've long stopped worrying about weather reports, and much less the 5-day forcasts. Looking outside my window has sufficed when wanting to know what to wear. (Granted, during that period when winter is changing to spring, I consistently get that wrong with regards to dress. And that was even during my "listening to weather reports" phase.) On another note, blogging about what the weather is outside or is going to be like is akin to talking about it. (At least one well-known blogger has now taken to doing it daily.) Talking about the weather has to be the lowest common denominator when it comes to conversation. It's pretty much the point when all intelligent conversation has long ceased and merely passing the time is the primary objective.
