Personal Weblogs Suck
A good rant on why someone-or-other hates personal weblogs. Chapter 2 talks about the reasons for blogging, or at least the types of bloggers out there. I'll admit to fitting, either currently or in the past, in all those categories, except for the fact I don't know 12 digits of Pi (only 5 or so). Chapter 3 talks about the type of commenter, and I easily fit into category 1, since I don't really see the point of being a dittohead on someone else's site (being a dittohead on my own site, now that's a different matter). Category 2 is one of the main reasons I don't have comments enabled. Chapter 4 has the smartest things to say, mostly about blogging sa a communications medium, and chapter 5 is right on: the word "blog" is absolutely stupid. (I use "blogging" as a verb and "blogger" as a noun, but what gets written is a "weblog". I prefer keeping the Web in "weblog".) Chapter 6 is about the models of acceptable uses for weblog, and I've followed (or at least tried to follow) the "Expert in the Field" model which “provides comparatively advanced/expert commentary on an area of interest” and have always dreamed of doing the "Author" model which “is a weblog that tries to legitimately attempt daily writings. Each writing, either fiction, non-fiction, poetry or prose, is methodically created and displayed for the intent of disseminating the original work [...] of an author.”
But personal weblogs do indeed suck. Well, if I know about it and I'm not reading it, at least yours does.
