The Yeti's Rule of Air Travel

TheYeti: “When a man gets on an airplane to visit a woman, he is going to try to sleep with her.”

I can hear the voices of at least two female friends who are saying "come on, guys can be friends with women, live far away, and want to visit them without thinking they will want to sleep with them". There are, of course, exceptions, because, as a rule, every rule has an exception. (Except that rule.) Part 3 of the rule is pretty important: “Oftentimes the woman is unaware that she is a target. The man may chicken out, or not get the right opportunity, or feel remorse.”

TheYeti's rule is the secondary reason—which isn't to discount its importance—why I don't go and visit female friends who are a plane ride away, the primary one being a lack of sufficient funds. It's not so much the fact that I would try to sleep with them but rather the perception of at least two of my male friends who would would wonder what the real reason is. Quietly—and not so quietly—they would wonder if there was something "more" involved. (This whole notion of "more than just friends is problematic", because romance is a type of friendship, not more of a friendship.) They actually wonder that about all of my female friends, where "there's something there". And yet I hang out with them, go figure.

The rule—or rather the stigma, legitimate or not—applies doubly so to women men have never met physically. If a man is so eager to meet a woman he's never met that he'd pay for a plane ticket, it's almost by definition creepy. (Almost. I know guys that have done it unproblematically. Also, note how the reverse isn't necessarily true. Note how Joyce got on a train to visit, after a bit of insistance, Harvey in American Splendor.)

The problem with The Yeti's site is the revealing of what I like to call Guy Secrets. Actually, it's a little too early for me to say that, not having a long enough exposure to the site, but if you're interested in knowing how guys—well, certain types of guys—TheYeti is a good place to start.

  • Third day in a row at City Square for @vanjazzfest, this time with @jmv to see the Shannon Scott Trio.  http://flic.kr/p/6BRUyD
  • @vanmega pants are a challenge no matter what you're doing.
  • How do awkward nerds do at SXSW? #couchbeers
  • @jordanbehan I'm going to hurtle downtown for #couchbeers. If you hear something crashing into the Strutta building, that's me and my bike.
  • Is the bike parking situation on the Vancouver Art Gallery block really as bad as I think it is?
