Regardless of whether it belongs on websites (as opposed to the browser), I've replaced the white-on-orange "XML" button on my weblog with it.

The icon is an *application*
Micah — Tue, 2005-12-20 06:23The icon is an *application* icon. It should *do* something, not link to a document that was not meant for human consumption. Either use the feed:// prefix for feed links to launch an app that will do the right thing with the feed, or just embed the links in the header for autodiscovery.
The web is an application
Richard — Tue, 2005-12-20 21:10The web is an application now, remember? I probably need to change the link anyway, since now it links to http://purl.org/net/syndication/subscribe/ plus the feed in question, which is supposed to redirect to a page that lets you subscribe to my feed in any type of application, web-based or otherwise. If the site it redirects to was currently available, of course.
feed:// tends to confuse machines like Drupal aggregators, which is probably worth patching to replace feed:// with http:// and not knowing how it works with Bloglines, never really having used it much.
Anyway, it looks like I'm in good company: Tim Bray uses a larger version of the button on his site. Appeal to authority, I know. But still!
The small icon I have doesn't look to prominent on tag pages such as the one for 'rss', but at least with autodiscovery you don't really even need the feed URL, much less a button.
