You Can Enjoy Cooking

You Can Enjoy Cooking
Not convincing. Gordon Davidescu always loved cooking. I'm trying to answer to the question "how does someone (like me) who hates cooking find a way to enjoy it?" [link]

Hi,

As the author of the article - which I wrote an insanely long seven years ago, I'd like to offer some thoughts.

I have since the writing of this article lived with people who have downright hated cooking.

I think the key element in going from being a cooking hater to a cooking lover is the perspective you bring with you. If you look at it as something which you're going to hate no matter what, then you have written your own fate. If you see it as a challenge, however, it can be overcome.

Start small. Start with foods that require only a minimal amount of cooking knowledge and work your way up. Don't be afraid to make mistakes because making mistakes leads to some of the greatest innovations in cooking ever. Definitely do it for friends as well as for yourself because then you get all sorts of encouragement.

Hope this helps a little more than my 24 year old self apparently did. :)

That's the key, for me. Right now I hate it no matter what, but I also have people in my life who challenge my opinions towards things that I "hate no matter what". The whole process: deciding what to eat, shopping for the ingredients, preparation, the cooking part, and cleaning up are tedious enough to make the eating part not that enjoyable. Eating is just the means to an end for me, not the end in itself like it is for people who enjoy talking about all the aspects of food. It almost took me to a point where I resented the amount of space my kitchen took up that could be used for something else. I didn't go that far.

Thanks for commenting, Gordon. The part I quoted helps more than I let on with my response.
